Move over Oscar, there’s a new girl in town.

Posted in Fashion on March 5, 2011 by hairbykatierose

What to do when the post-Christmas blues set in and the rain seems like it’s never going to let up? Get excited for awards season, of course.

It’s one of my weaknesses. The glitz, the glam, the carpet, the bevy of Hollywood royalty under one roof, and of course…. The hair. While sometimes a sceptic and always a realist, I also allow myself to dive into the shallow, fluffy pool of feathers and fairy dust that is celebrity. I remain unaffected when I do decide to come up for air, but god damn it, I enjoy my swim!

Let’s continue with the swimming analogy, shall we? Mostly because it’s hilariously ironic. (Those of you who know me will agree.)

I want to talk about The Oscars. There were fleeting moments that left me with that warm feeling that comes with peeing discreetly in a crowded swimming pool, but as an overall experience it was over-chlorinated and made my eyes sore. Unlike the Golden Globes. They reminded me of the time my brother and his wife came over for a Costco dinner that ended in smoking a joint and having piggyback races in my building’s pool (a scenario much more suited to a certain Mr Franco).

Instead of bore you with all the mundane detail that is my opinion… (More irony. Ha! Me? Mundane? I know!) I’ve decided to dish out my own awards… The 1st Annual Academy That Is Actually Just Made Up Of One Hair Stylist Awards, affectionately referred to in The Industry as The K-R0s. Drumroll please…

The Award for Most Awkward and Annoying Oscars host:

Anne Hathaway

Being humble is nice. Acting like you really think you don’t deserve to be hosting the Oscars… kinda just makes me think you don’t deserve to be hosting the Oscars. I respect Hathaway as an actress, I just wish she’d dialed it down a little. She reminded me of a geeky high school drama student and did nothing to dispel the myth that you can’t be into musical theatre and be pretty cool at the same time. (I’m still trying to convince my husband.) Besides, you can change your outfit as many times as you like, but you’re still just Anne Hathaway in a different dress.

The award for Making Being a Dirty Old Man Totally Acceptable:

Kirk Douglas

Not only were we okay with ol’ Kirky perving at Anne Hathaway on stage and nearly copping a feel of Melissa Leo’s right tit, but we thought it was adorable.

Was is the recent stroke that made it forgivable or just the fact that he’s a Hollywood Demi-god? Regardless, Mr Douglas’s award presentation was my favorite of the night.

The award for Rocking The Nastiest Movie Hair of 2010:

Melissa Leo

Miss Leo did such a great job of wearing that white-trash, bleached-out shag in The Fighter that nobody even knew she was a MILF in real life.  And she dropped an F-bomb during her acceptance speech. After toiling away at her craft for decades and finally gaining recognition at fifty, i say she can pepper her speech with whatever the fuck she wants.

The award for Making Getting Knocked-Up Seem Like a Cool Idea:

Natalie Portman

She gets to be in loads of movies, she looks hot with a shaved head, she wears fancy dresses, she’s won an Oscar, she’s Jewish… I wanna get knocked-up too! Or maybe I just want to be Natalie Portman… That might be it.

The Just Because You’re Hot doesn’t Mean You Don’t Have to do Your Hair Award:

Scarlett Johansson

She’s not on my list of ladies I’d go gay for, but I know a lot of humans, with and without the penis, who’d love to do things to Scarlett, and I wholly respect their opinions. What I don’t respect? Showing up to the Oscars with your hair decidedly un-done. Maybe Scarlett had a drink before the ceremony and decided to work on her flat-iron curls. Maybe she got on the wrong side of a ceiling fan. Maybe Ryan used to just hate it when she wore her hair that way… I spent so much time speculating on the hair that I still don’t know how I feel about the burgundy doily dress.

The award for Hair That I Wish Was In My Portfolio:

Mila Kunis

Loose without it being messy and with a vintage finger-waved feel thrown in, Mila’s look was young and elegant. And yet, when I close my eyes, I just hear Meg Griffin. Such a shame.

The I’m Playing the Role of the Seashell in my School Play Award:

Cate Blanchett

We all have to start somewhere, but surely Cate has surpassed the stage of portraying inanimate objects. The beading on her dress could have been pretty. But something went wrong. I’ll get back to you when I figure out what it was.

The Award for Being Able To Do No Wrong In My Eyes:

James Franco

How was he as an Oscars host? Who cares? All i know is that I’m super jealous of the cliff that got to play The Cliff in 127 Hours. And I’d totally cut off his arm if he asked me to. And drink his pee.

… too far?

Maybe this is a good time to conclude my Oscars round-up. Besides, there’s only so long you can stay in the water before your fingers start to prune.

Until next time, stay dry!

Short and Sweet… and a little bit sexy

Posted in Beauty, Fashion on September 24, 2010 by hairbykatierose

I’m a short-haired girl, but I haven’t always been. I hid for years behind long, crunchy curls and Aussie Sprunch Spray was my best friend.  There’s definitely something liberating about feeling the wind on the back of my neck, and finally seeing the shape of my scull after I shaved the sides for the first time was definitely a little emotional.  Tonight after a family dinner with my brother and sister-in-law and my little parentals, the subject of short ladies haircuts came up. I got to thinking about all the gorgeous celebrity women who are either rocking, or have rocked a short haircut.

Emma Watson has come a long way since emerging onto the big screen as the frizzy haired Hermione. (That little witch could have done with a Brazilian Blowout!)

British Supermodel Agyness Deyn could probably make a comb-over look good. Apparently the model has had short hair since she was thirteen, and even shaved her head at one point.

I’ve haven’t seen Carey Mulligan in An Education yet, but if the covers of magazines are anything to go by, she looks absolutely precious. I also loved her 2010 Oscar outfit. (Can we also just take a moment to admire the smokey eyeshadow in the picture below, and how it makes her eye-colour pop?)

Ginnifer Goodwin‘s Big Love show is a little creepy, and she annoyed the hell out of me in He’s Just Not That Into You. Her haircut’s cute though.

Kelly Osbourne changes her hair colour more than my friend Marlee, from hair school. That’s a lot.

This Vogue photoshoot featuring Michelle Williams is one of my favorites. Love love love.

If you can look beautiful with a shaved head, then a cute cropped do isn’t even a question. Just Natalie Portman looking stunning and being smart… again.

Twiggy with her original mod style. And a passion for lashes… not unlike myself.

And Mia Farrow with another classic that just keeps doing the rounds…

And last but not least. The actress that incited this evenings post dinner chit chat. Maura Tierney of News Radio and ER tries out a new look in her show The Whole Truth. My brother thinks it makes her look old. Maybe she’s just getting old? The jury’s out on this one. What do you think?

Child, please!

My hair show/party to celebrate me going onto the floor is next Tuesday. Instead of spending time writing a long post, I’m gonna plan for my event and leave you with this funny little video I found on Youtube. Please don’t try this at home…

FMA… not to be confused with FML…

Posted in Fashion on September 13, 2010 by hairbykatierose

Believe it or not this is my first blog from bed. Christopher and I returned from the FMA Fashion Week Opening Reception and Awards Gala moments ago and I’ve just spread the contents of my goodie bag on the bed for examination (Yes! I got a goody bag. Exciting, right?)

It was an overwhealming evening, what with glitzy dress overload, constant camera flashes and coming face-to-face, real life, in person with many of my Twitter ‘friends’. (@NinjaOnTheGrind @adoniadonia @DennisPang @iglooqueen @nadiachu @DonovanPee @the_bradford)

It’s funny going to a ‘fashion’ event.  Any other day I dress to impress, (of course) and feel absolutely dandy with whatever outfit I put together. I take pride in having my own style and ‘owning’ whatever I wear. I also put cute outfits together with ease, many times putting little to no thought into it. Well, I’ll tell ya. Put the word FASHION in front of an event and this whole outfit picking malarkey gets a lot more stressful! I pomp’ed my hair, but on my red lippy and after some deliberation finally decided on a red vintage dress with polka dots, black tights, a thick black belt and the Mary Janes I wore on my wedding day. Christopher also looked dashing, and lest we forget that men too, care about fashion, I’ll tell you what he wore tonight. An American Apparel V-neck T-shirt, a vintage suit jacket from Camden Market in London, dropped-crotch denim jeans with a cuff and Redwing boots. (Do I need to mention the accessories that kind of come as part of the package?) Fine. Glasses. Beard. Side parting with fade. English accent. Oh, and a cute little hairdresser on his arm.

There’s still more Fashion Week to come, so watch this space…

I’m gonna go to bed and dream about cocktails, camera flashes,  and high heels.

Taiwanna go to bed!

I’m officially too exhausted to be entertaining. I will however, blog tonight because I ain’t no quitter! Today was one of the best days of ‘work’ ever; a twelve hour day of non-stop hair and minimal food breaks, but worth every second. I’ll post photos in the next few days and tell you what i thought of the three designers that participated in the Taiwanfest fashion show.

I just had a McFlurry and a cheeseburger (in that order) and now I’m finishing a glass of wine. I’m gonna take one last swig, remove my make-up and work through my McDonalds guilt. Actually, I might be a real rebel and leave my makeup on.

Goodnight darlings. Mama’s gotta get some Z’s.

Watch me on the silver screen (if your computer is silver.)

Words from my mouth and not from my fingers…. (but always from my heart).  Enjoy.

Do you ever wonder what cats dream about? Brian May is lounging above me on the couch cushion, fast asleep, twitching and moving. It’s actually the cutest thing in the world (in case you were wondering what that was).

I had two of my favorite guests at the salon today. They both have curly hair and they’re both lovely. They said that they would follow me onto the floor when I graduate which made me very happy.  I won’t know who comes to see me because I charge ‘apprentice prices’ and who just loves my work and comes to me ’cause I’m…. ME, until I go onto the floor. (In just over three weeks!)

Since getting some exciting news yesterday, I haven’t even had time to think about being on the floor or planning my graduation party. TaiwanFest is a Vancouver festival that’s been held annually since 1990. As part of the opening ceremonies an open-air fashion show will take place downtown, featuring one local designer and two Taiwanese designers. There will be a total of 26 models (including 2 supermodels from Taiwan) and guess, just guess who’s going to be doing the hair for this fashion show? What’s that? Did you say an excited and talented team from Rain Hair Salon, that includes your favorite hair and kitty blogger? How did you know?! I am beyond excited and a little nervous too. This will be my first foray into runway hair, and as thrilled as I am to be a part of it, it’s also causing me to doubt my abilities. Stupid, right? I know.  Thankfully Victor will be there as our team leader, and that guy knows his shit. I’ll feel better just knowing he’s there. Kind of like when I first started experimenting with alcohol and only felt comfortable getting drunk with my older brother. It just felt… safer.

So that’s my news for this evening. I won’t try to be funny or blab on about anything else. I’m rather tired and feeling a little bland. Maybe it’s because I watched South Park as I was eating dinner. It may have made me slightly stupider.

I’m gonna go to sleep and try to creep into Brian’s dreams. I’ll let you know if I find anything interesting.
